AN ENLIGTENING LECTURE ON RELIGION
On 04/25/2006, renowned author of the religions of the world, Karen Armstrong lectured at Xavier University on Islam in the context of the other great faiths of
the world. A leading thinker on the role of religion in the contemporary global scene, she sought to impart understanding of the monotheistic religions through
examination of the Axial Age (circa 800 -200 BCE) which also gave rise to the traditions some of which we now call Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and perhaps
also to include Confucianism. A part of her presentation is drawn from her latest book, The Great Transformation, The Beginning of Our Religious Traditions,
to which anyone interested in her work and who missed this enlightening lecture may refer. On 04/23/2006, Xavier University, Cincinnati, hosted a Town Hall
Meeting at the Cintas Center. Featured speakers were Karen Armstrong, Farooq Kathwari, Dr. Baher Foad, and Jerry Leach who convened to discuss the
question, "What is Islam's place within globalization?" The panelists presented a fair and balanced assessment of the pitfalls and opportunities and set a
constructive and hopeful tone on a difficult topic. Following the presentation, questions were asked by Dr. James Buchanan, Dr. Anas Malik and then from
members of the audience.
