ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF CHINA
The Constitution of the People's Republic of China provides for three levels of governance: the province (equivalent to the several states of the USA) , county, and township. In actual practice, two more levels can be seen: the prefecture, under provinces and the village (informal), under townships. Each official level is administered by a tier of Chinese civil service.

Photo above: Ding Yuhong has worked as a tailor in the same small shop in Beijing
for over ten years with her husband, who helps her once he gets home from his day
job. The streets and back allies of Chinese cities are full of family establishments,
some no bigger than broom closets, selling everything from tailoring services to
haircuts.
The seamstress Ding Yuhong is a familiar face to almost everyone in the
neighborhood. The little girl, Su Paiting is feeling too sick to go to school, so she
drops by to talk to her “auntie” Ding.
“I don’t need to go to the clinic,” says six-year-old Su Paiting looking to Auntie Ding
for support. They chat about the neighborhood stray cat who woke the little girl up
in the middle of the night.
